World Foundation Secures $52.5 Million in WLD Token Sale for Global Expansion
The World Foundation, the non-profit organization supporting the World protocol, has secured $52.5 million in new funding through a strategic sale of its WLD token. All tokens purchased in this sale are subject to a one-year lockup period. Pantera Capital led the initial close, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto.
The World Foundation clarified that these tokens do not represent an investment interest or rights to profits or returns. A spokesperson stated that WLD purchased by investors does not signify an equity interest in Tools for Humanity, the for-profit entity behind the World project.

Global Expansion of World ID Technology
Proceeds from the new funding will be allocated to the global expansion of World ID technology, targeting organizations, consumers, and AI agents. This token sale coincides with World marking three years since its launch into production. The project is shifting its focus from network building to broadening the adoption of World ID.
World enables unique human verification through a one-time Orb verification process, creating a World ID without disclosing personal identity. The World ID is stored on a user's phone, utilizing advanced cryptography and anonymized multi-party computation to maintain user privacy. The World Foundation developed and open-sourced this technology.
The Growing Need for Proof of Human
Cosmo Jiang, a general partner at Pantera Capital, observed that the necessity for Proof of Human is becoming evident due to the accelerated development of artificial intelligence. Jiang also noted an increase in enterprise engagement. World stated that the rapid growth of AI agents intensifies the demand for technologies that can differentiate humans from machines online.
Without robust proof-of-human infrastructure, sectors such as digital advertising, online dating, voting systems, creative marketplaces, and video communications could encounter challenges from AI-generated content, synthetic identities, and deepfakes. The foundation also announced the release of World ID 4.0, designed for enterprise-scale integrations, allowing developers to build additional credentials within the World ID stack using zero-knowledge proofs.
World Network Growth and Funding
World ID is integrated with platforms including Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder. Over 39 million individuals have joined the World Network, with more than 18 million completing Orb verification. Users have generated over 475 million World ID proofs since the project's inception.
World was conceived by Sam Altman, Max Novendstern, and Alex Blania. The World Foundation oversees the protocol's governance, ecosystem grants, and network operations. The foundation stated its objective to achieve economic self-sustainability for the protocol through application fees, rather than user fees.
Tools for Humanity, the for-profit company, is responsible for the project's hardware and software development and has raised approximately $240 million in venture equity. The World Foundation and its related entities had previously raised $200 million through WLD token sales, bringing the project's total funding to approximately $492.5 million.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Market Performance
The World project has encountered privacy and regulatory scrutiny since its launch. Authorities in Spain, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines have initiated investigations, imposed restrictions, suspended operations, or issued fines concerning aspects of the project's biometric data collection. World stated its ongoing engagement with regulators during its global expansion efforts.
The WLD token is currently trading at approximately $0.37, with a market capitalization of about $1.31 billion, having decreased by roughly 2% over the past 24 hours.
