Tether Gold Reserves Increase Amidst Gold Market Decline
The physical gold reserves supporting Tether Gold (XAUt) increased by 9.5% during the second quarter. This growth was attributed by Tether to an expanding demand for tokenized gold exposure, even as gold prices saw a significant decline.
During the same period, gold prices dropped by 14.1%, marking its most substantial quarterly decrease since the second quarter of 2013.
Tether's CEO on XAUt Demand and Growth
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, stated that XAUt holders acquire the token even when gold prices are not rising. They utilize market downturns to enhance their physical gold ownership through a product characterized by full backing, transparency, portability, and on-chain accessibility. This strategy highlights a unique approach to gold investment in a volatile market.
In the first quarter, XAUt's physical gold reserves increased by 36%, reaching 707,747 fine troy ounces, with a valuation of $3.3 billion by the quarter's end. XAUt also obtained Shariah certification from Amanah Advisors in July, a development that could broaden the token's accessibility within Islamic financial institutions. This certification is a significant step towards wider adoption.
