Institutional Focus May Narrow Altcoin Season Success

Institutional investors are increasingly focusing their activity on a narrower selection of digital assets. This trend suggests that future altcoin seasons may feature fewer successful projects, according to a report by crypto market maker Wintermute.

Institutional Investor Activity

Wintermute's over-the-counter (OTC) flow report for the first half of 2026 indicated that institutional counterparties were responsible for 72% of spot flow across all tokens on its OTC desk. This figure represents a record high, increasing from 61% in the second half of 2025 and 59% in the first half of the previous year.

The report noted that liquidity is concentrating in assets favored by institutions, while activity in the broader “long tail” of the market has weakened. Between the first half of 2024 and the first half of 2026, the number of unique tokens traded by Wintermute's institutional clients increased by 24%, in contrast to a 76% growth among retail clients. Furthermore, institutional activity following a token's price and volume surge typically subsided after approximately one day, whereas retail activity often remained elevated for about three days.

These findings align with broader market observations of capital clustering around a smaller group of altcoins. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju stated on June 20 that the traditional rotation of Bitcoin profits into smaller crypto assets had largely ceased, with data showing Bitcoin-denominated altcoin trading volume near its lowest point since 2021. The 10 largest non-stablecoin altcoins currently represent approximately 80.5% of the non-Bitcoin, non-stablecoin market capitalization.

Kaiko, a data provider, observed a similar concentration in exchange trading. In July 2025, Kaiko reported that the 10 largest altcoins accounted for 63% of altcoin trading volume, an increase from about 50% several months prior, as activity in smaller tokens diminished. Andrei Grachev, managing partner at DWF Labs, commented on March 15 that broad altcoin rallies are being replaced by more selective sector movements, citing an abundance of tokens competing for limited capital and institutional investors' focus on Bitcoin, Ether, and tokenized real-world assets.
