US Federal Debt Exceeds $40 Trillion, Fueling Bitcoin Scarcity Debate
The United States federal debt has surpassed $40 trillion, sparking discussions about Bitcoin's role as a scarce, non-sovereign asset. Interest expenses have become the second-largest federal government budget expenditure after Social Security during the first ten months of fiscal year 2026.
This financial milestone coincided with the Treasury Department's efforts to address a bond selloff that had elevated long-term yields to their highest levels since 2007. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an increase in the buyback of 10- to 30-year debt to at least $4 billion per operation.
This action initially led to a decrease in yields and the US dollar, while Bitcoin and gold experienced a rally. Bitcoin was trading at approximately $72,600, marking a 6% increase over 24 hours and a 15% increase over the week, with Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) also seeing significant inflows.
Market Reactions to Treasury Actions
Market analysts have identified the Treasury's actions and broader fiscal conditions as potential catalysts for Bitcoin's recent surge, alongside optimism concerning a more favorable US crypto policy. JC Parets, founder of TrendLabs, suggested that the Treasury's increased purchases of longer-term government bonds were perceived by bond-market participants as an attempt to counteract rising long-term rates.
Parets indicated that if the market believes the government intends to resist rapidly increasing long-term rates, it could alter investment calculations for various assets, including Bitcoin.
Expert Perspectives on Bitcoin's Trajectory
Conversely, Dean Chen, an analyst at Bitunix, expressed the view that the debt milestone does not inherently present a bullish signal for Bitcoin. Chen noted that although Treasury buybacks temporarily reduced long-term yields and weakened the dollar, ongoing deficits and increasing financing requirements could eventually drive borrowing costs higher again.
Chen also stated that Bitcoin's short-term trajectory would be more influenced by broader financial conditions, highlighting US dollar strength, long-term Treasury yields, and inflation expectations as crucial variables to monitor.
Analysts at the DeFi protocol Yield Basis offered a long-term perspective, suggesting that the continued expansion of US debt could boost demand for Bitcoin as a hedge against currency debasement. They attributed this to Bitcoin's fixed supply and its lack of a sovereign issuer.
