Bitmine Sets 5% Ether Supply Hard Cap

Bitmine Immersion Technologies is close to achieving its objective of limiting its Ether (ETH) holdings, as Bitmine sets 5% as a hard cap for its total supply of the cryptocurrency. The company has amassed approximately 6 million ETH, accounting for about 4.9% of the total supply, and needs an additional 100,000 ETH to reach its target.

Chairman Tom Lee confirmed at the Token2049 conference that this 5% will be a “hard cap,” meaning no further accumulation beyond this point. This decision marks a shift from previous statements that suggested a potential reevaluation in 2027 based on Ethereum‘s adoption.

Strategic Accumulation During Bear Market

Lee noted that the majority of Bitmine's Ether acquisition occurred during a crypto bear market. This allowed the company to build its position while prices were lower, optimizing its investment strategy.

The 5% hard cap is also linked to Bitmine's capital strategy. Ceasing accumulation eliminates the need to raise additional funds specifically for Ether purchases. This approach is expected to enhance the company's performance relative to ETH's price movements.

Capital Strategy and Funding

Bitmine has utilized capital markets to build its Ether treasury. This includes a significant $300 million perpetual preferred stock offering that took place in June.

The company has also engaged in share repurchases, buying back 16.1 million common shares as part of its $4 billion buyback program. While the 5% accumulation limit is set, staking rewards could still contribute to its ETH holdings. Lee previously indicated that any ETH earned through staking could be sold to maintain the strict 5% supply share.
