XRP Ledger Repairs Its Lending Protocol Before It Goes Live

Developers for the XRP Ledger are implementing a preemptive fix for its new lending protocol prior to its activation. A follow-up amendment is being introduced to correct issues within the original LendingProtocol code while it remains in the network's voting queue.

Instead of waiting for the initial version to go live and then applying a patch, developers have released LendingProtocolV1_1. This amendment addresses identified issues in the original code before it takes effect. Documentation now indicates that both amendments are prerequisites for the feature, ensuring the repaired version is adopted from the outset.

Lending Protocol Mechanics and Institutional Focus

The lending protocol facilitates on-chain, fixed-term, uncollateralized loans utilizing pooled funds. It incorporates “first-loss capital” to mitigate defaults, diverging from automated collateralization by relying on off-chain underwriting. For amendments to become active on the XRP Ledger, they must secure 80% validator support over a two-week period. The protocol is designed for institutional credit, differing from typical collateral and liquidation models prevalent in decentralized finance.

Risk Mitigation and Broader Expansion

This proactive measure aligns with a recent incident where developers rectified a dormant bug in the payment engine that could have led to the creation of counterfeit XRP. The lending protocol uses off-chain underwriting for borrower assessment and employs first-loss capital, provided by a loan broker, to absorb initial losses from defaults. Issuers maintain compliance functionalities, including the ability to freeze accounts or claw back funds.

This lending feature is part of a broader expansion of credit and DeFi capabilities on the XRP Ledger, aimed at enhancing financial market infrastructure.
