Bitcoin Seeks Support Amidst Broader Market Downturn

Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a decline below $81,000 on Friday following the opening of Wall Street, coinciding with Brent crude oil reaching a seven-month high. As the cryptocurrency briefly dipped to $80,988 before stabilizing around $81,600, Bitcoin seeks support, with its price action focused on regaining its 50-day simple moving average (SMA) at $81,781.

US stock markets also opened lower, with the S&P 500 down 0.6%, the Nasdaq Composite Index down 0.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average decreasing by 1.4%. This occurred amid concerns regarding AI-sector expenditures and a surge in oil prices, influenced by Middle East tensions. The 10-year US bond yield remained below 5%, recording 4.939%.

Oil Prices Surge Amid Geopolitical Tensions

WTI crude oil surpassed $102 per barrel, reaching its highest level since September 16, while Brent crude saw a nearly 3% increase to $116 per barrel, a level not observed since mid-March.

Economist Robin Brooks noted that oil prices were rising despite Persian Gulf oil flows nearing pre-war levels for many nations and Saudi Arabia exceeding its pre-war average. Brooks indicated that markets were incorporating a significant risk premium, observing a decoupling between prices and flows not seen since the conflict began.

Bitcoin's Short-Term Price Outlook

Keith Alan, cofounder of Material Indicators, suggested the potential for further support retests for Bitcoin. He noted that BTC/USD had fallen below its 50-day SMA at $81,781, with bulls attempting to reclaim this level by the daily close.

Alan indicated that a failure to reclaim the SMA could lead to a support test in the $78,000 to $80,000 range. Previously, substantial Bitcoin price support was identified between $80,000 and $81,500, an area representing the aggregate cost basis for investors in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
