Bitcoin crashes 6% to 7-Week Low Amid Broader Market Decline
On Thursday, Bitcoin crashes 6% as its value fell below $76,000. This significant decline occurred as broader risk assets reversed gains previously made following the US midterm elections.
The downturn pushed Bitcoin's value to $75,463, marking its lowest point since September 16.
Broader Market Sell-Off and Analyst Perspectives
This decline in Bitcoin coincided with a substantial sell-off in the stock market. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 4.2%, reaching its lowest level since July 29, while the S&P 500 decreased by 2.7%. Equities relinquished gains made after the Democratic sweep of the US House and Senate as traders shifted away from technology stocks.
Amidst this, oil prices rebounded, with WTI crude surpassing $90 per barrel and Brent increasing by 2.5% to nearly $97. This followed reports of new tanker strikes in the Middle East and uncertainties surrounding potential US-Iran policy developments. Jordan Watson of Tandem Investment Advisors suggested increased volatility might be expected as investors analyze election outcomes and their policy implications. Economist Mohamed El-Erian noted that the day's tech stock weakness was not unexpected, questioning the long-term impact of the political shift on the tech sector.
Crypto Market Liquidations and Bitcoin's Technical Outlook
Crypto markets saw substantial liquidations, with nearly $500 million in positioning cleared in the initial hour of the US trading session, and total 24-hour liquidations approaching $850 million. The Bitcoin movement brought BTC/USD close to the lower boundary of its one-month trading range.
This threatened the support level at its 50-week simple moving average (SMA) of $75,733. Crypto trader Rekt Capital observed that Bitcoin's current behavior mirrored patterns from May, when stable trading around $80,000 preceded a breakdown to macro lows of $57,000 in late June.
