Bitcoin May Seek 20-Month Trend Line Reclamation

Bitcoin is attempting to surpass a significant “inflection frontier” that has historically preceded new macro highs, according to a report from CryptoQuant. Based on this analysis, Bitcoin may seek 20-month trend line reclamation.

CryptoQuant's analysis suggests that Bitcoin (BTC) could continue toward new all-time highs if it successfully breaks above its 20-month moving average, currently at $87,165. The market cycle signals metric indicates that BTC/USD is prepared to reclaim this crucial level, which it last lost in December 2025.

Understanding the Inflection Frontier

On-chain analytics from CryptoQuant show BTC/USD engaging with its 20-month simple moving average (SMA). This 20-month SMA, at $87,165 as of October 16, serves as the central trend line for the Bollinger Bands metric, forming the basis of CryptoQuant's market cycle signals tool. This tool aims to identify Bitcoin's current position within its market cycle.

Bollinger Bands utilize standard deviation to establish upper and lower bands around the 20-month SMA, currently at $121,640 and $52,694, respectively. CryptoQuant's indicator designates the area between the lower band and the SMA as an “accumulation base.” The SMA itself is referred to as an “inflection frontier,” representing a previous point of investor capitulation when the price fell below it, most recently in December 2025.

With Bitcoin now approaching this capitulation zone from below, historical data suggests that successful breakouts have led to new cycle highs. A CryptoQuant contributor noted that the market has completed its “reset” just over a year after the all-time high of $124,709 on October 6, 2025. While Bollinger Bands are not designed for direct buy and sell signals, the market cycle signals indicate that “smart money” tends to take profits when BTC/USD reaches its upper band.

Bullish Outlook and On-Chain Indicators

Although the current upper band is below Bitcoin's most recent all-time high of $126,200 from October 2025, CryptoQuant anticipates the next rally will extend beyond that level. Another contributor observed that despite current price levels around $82,442, the on-chain indicator BTC: Market Cycle Signals suggests the market is in an early stage of growth.

The 20-month SMA aligns with Bitcoin's 2026 opening level of $87,490, reinforcing its significance as a resistance point. Exchange order books show substantial ask liquidity in this vicinity. CryptoQuant maintains an optimistic outlook on Bitcoin's developing bull market, even amidst broader macroeconomic challenges.

Data from three on-chain metrics was highlighted by a contributor as providing “cautious optimism” for a return of bullish momentum through the end of October. The CEO of CryptoQuant previously stated in late August that the bear market had concluded, based on readings from the bull-bear market cycle indicator. This indicator, which composites several on-chain profitability metrics, shows accelerating bullish momentum with a current reading of 0.186, an increase from 0.042 in August.
