Bitcoin Stabilizes Near $65,000 Amidst Economic Data and Geopolitical Considerations
Bitcoin maintained stability near $65,000 on Thursday, holding above the $64,500 mark. This occurred amidst softer U.S. economic data, which alleviated concerns regarding a potential Federal Reserve rate hike. Bitcoin traded within a narrow range during the FOMC meeting and Chair Kevin Warsh's subsequent press conference, before edging higher as Thursday's economic indicators emerged.

Bitcoin's Resilience Amidst Market Volatility
Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo, observed Bitcoin‘s resilience, noting its composure contrasted with a Nasdaq 100 in correction and a semiconductor index experiencing a bear market. Kalchev indicated that for much of July, Bitcoin's movements largely mirrored the semiconductor trade.
He further stated that this correlation has since weakened, with crypto assets holding firm despite renewed U.S.-Iran tensions, oil prices nearing $92, and a semiconductor index decline exceeding 14% over five trading sessions. Kalchev suggested that some of this market calm could be attributed to thinning summer liquidity rather than inherent strength.
He also pointed out that assets whose valuations are tied to inexpensive capital and AI optimism are declining, a trend Bitcoin has not followed. Ether saw a recovery, climbing back above $1,900. Other altcoins, however, experienced declines, with XRP at $1.07 and Solana near $74, while BNB traded at $572, according to The Block's price data. XRP and Solana were down 6% and 5% respectively over a seven-day period.
FOMC Decision and Economic Indicators
The FOMC voted 9-3 on Wednesday to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 3.5% to 3.75%. Three policymakers dissented, advocating for a quarter-point rate increase. Chair Warsh affirmed the absence of a “soft inflation target” and emphasized that the decision to hold rates did not preclude future action.
Kalchev highlighted that Core PCE inflation rose 0.1% in June, below the 0.2% expectation, and second-quarter GDP growth was 1.5%, lower than the 2.1% forecast. Initial jobless claims also increased to 197,000. Kalchev concluded that these readings indicated a cooling economy across multiple sectors, thereby weakening the argument for further monetary tightening. He noted that for the crypto market, this data lessened the impact of the hawkish hold.
Expert Analysis on Geopolitical and Market Factors
Analysts connected geopolitical factors to Bitcoin's near-term outlook following recent decisions. Richard Green of RootstockLabs stated that a combination of a hawkish hold and Middle East tensions posed a short-term challenge for Bitcoin as a risk asset. Green also noted Bitcoin's long-term function as a monetary asset in environments of persistent inflation.
Paul Howard, a senior director at Wincent, linked the Federal Reserve's cautious approach to the timing of the U.S. midterms, suggesting that a rate increase could have negative political ramifications for the current administration. Gabe Selby, head of research at CF Benchmarks, indicated that the composition of the FOMC vote was more significant than the vote count itself.
Selby observed that all three dissenting votes originated from regional presidents, while all Federal Reserve Board governors voted to hold rates. He stated that the board's unanimous decision supported the view that the committee would maintain its stance through year-end. Selby also argued that Warsh's strong disapproval of forward guidance amplified the importance of all data releases prior to September.
Market Activity and Investor Sentiment
Glassnode reported that Treasuries have out-yielded the three-month futures basis for the second extended period on record. This scenario, where Treasuries offer a higher yield than the basis, reduces the incentive for trading desks that provide leverage, depth, and volume to participate in the market. Glassnode noted that spot volume, measured in coins, had reached its lowest point since 2019, with decreased exchange flows and a sparse offer side of the order book.
Glassnode's Bitcoin Vector indicated a “Risk Off” environment, described as a tactical pause, positioned one level above capitulation. The firm stated that the current drawdown represented the shallowest bear market on record by depth, though it had not yet matched the duration of previous cycles. K33 reported that July was tracking as Bitcoin's weakest spot trading month since November 2023, with average daily spot volume around $2.2 billion and CME open interest near its lowest level since 2023.
U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net inflows of $32 million on Wednesday, following four consecutive days of outflows, according to SoSoValue. Spot Ether ETFs experienced outflows of $18.6 million on the same day. The largest corporate holder of Bitcoin sold the cryptocurrency this year for the first time in nearly four years, having made no purchases in the four weeks preceding earnings. Any further sales would be interpreted as an indicator of treasury-model stress.
