CFTC Approves Coinbase Clearing LLC as Derivatives Clearing Organization

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has officially registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization. This significant approval means Coinbase now holds all three essential federal registrations—exchange, futures broker, and clearinghouse—necessary to operate a comprehensive futures business.

This new registration complements Coinbase's existing registrations for Coinbase Derivatives, LLC as a designated contract market and Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. as a futures commission merchant.

Coinbase's Clearinghouse Operations

The acquisition of the clearinghouse registration empowers Coinbase to directly develop and settle fully collateralized contracts. The company anticipates this will significantly accelerate product development and reduce its reliance on external partners for new product launches.

Coinbase's clearinghouse is notable for being USDC-native, accepting the stablecoin as collateral and facilitating 24-hour settlements. This approach diverges from traditional clearinghouses, which typically use cash and Treasuries and operate on standard banking calendars. However, Coinbase's planned single stock perpetuals for assets like Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia will continue to be cleared through existing partners, as Coinbase Clearing LLC currently handles only fully collateralized contracts.

Competitive Landscape and Recent Company Activities

Molly Abraham, Coinbase's general counsel, confirmed that the CFTC approval completes the company's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure. This move mirrors Payward, Kraken's parent company, which acquired Bitnomial last year to secure similar exchange and clearinghouse registrations. Payward intends to use these registrations to deploy perpetual futures for U.S. clients on Hyperliquid, with Bitnomial managing market creation and clearing on a public blockchain. Coinbase now possesses the necessary licenses to pursue comparable initiatives, though specific plans have not yet been announced.

This approval is part of a busy period for Coinbase. The company recently expanded its partnership with Citi, enabling the bank's institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments. Last week, Coinbase introduced fixed-rate USDC loans backed by Bitcoin through a collaboration with Morpho, and in August, it launched tokenized stocks on its Base platform for international users.
