Crypto Industry Midterm Spending Totals $176 Million

The crypto industry has invested around $176 million across more than 100 midterm election campaigns this cycle. This substantial financial commitment from the cryptocurrency sector appears to diverge from the priorities of the general electorate, as a recent survey indicates that most Americans do not consider support for emerging financial technologies such as blockchain, crypto, and decentralized finance to be a primary concern.

Only 13% of surveyed adults consider it extremely or very important for political candidates to back the growth of these new financial technologies. This data was gathered from an Ipsos survey conducted for the DeFi Education Fund, a crypto policy advocacy organization.

Voter Priorities vs. Industry Spending

A broader question regarding the importance of encouraging the development of the next generation of financial technology within the U.S. garnered more support, with 35% of respondents deeming it very important. Republicans showed higher prioritization on this broader point at 45% compared to 30% for Democrats. The survey, which included 1,545 adults, was conducted from September 8 to 16, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

Despite the limited voter emphasis on direct crypto support, the crypto industry's financial contributions are substantial. A Reuters analysis revealed that super PAC Fairshake and its affiliates were responsible for approximately $150.8 million of the total spending through October 20. One Fairshake affiliate has reported over $46 million in expenditures opposing former Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio’s Senate race.

Industry's Regulatory Focus

The high stakes for the industry follow the failure of the Clarity Act in September, which aimed to establish federal regulations for crypto markets. The bill did not pass a key Senate vote due to disagreements over ethics provisions related to former President Donald Trump’s crypto holdings. Subsequently, the industry has shifted its focus to engaging regulatory bodies such as the SEC and CFTC to define market rules.

The survey also suggests that voters prioritize financial security and control over specific crypto-related issues. Approximately 63% of respondents believe the financial system requires upgrades to counter threats like AI and cybercrime, and 49% indicated that the government should not dictate which products individuals can invest in.
