George Santos Banned by Kalshi for Market Manipulation
Kalshi, a regulated prediction market, has permanently banned former Representative George Santos and issued a $71,356 fine. The platform determined that Santos engaged in market manipulation related to a contract concerning his attendance at the State of the Union address, resulting in profits of $17,839.57.
Details of Market Manipulation
According to a disciplinary notice from Kalshi's compliance department dated August 28, George Santos executed a series of substantial trades between February 2 and February 25. These trades were placed in a market where the outcome depended on his presence at the State of the Union.
As an individual with the capacity to influence the event's outcome, Santos was prohibited from trading in this particular market under Kalshi's regulations. The notice further detailed that Santos subsequently made several public statements regarding his attendance, some of which were identified as false or misleading. These statements were made in an attempt to sway the prices of the “Yes” and “No” contracts.
The compliance department concluded that Santos's statements were intentionally made to manipulate market prices and were effective in doing so, allowing him to gain $17,839.57. Kalshi stated that this conduct violated multiple platform rules, including those against market manipulation, trading with influence over an event's outcome, and employing deceptive schemes.
Santos was also cited for non-cooperation during the investigation. The permanent ban prohibits Santos from any direct or indirect access to the Kalshi platform, marking the first lifetime ban issued by the exchange to a former member of Congress.
Broader Implications and Kalshi's Response
This incident highlights ongoing integrity concerns within prediction markets. Recent cases include a CFTC fine against a former White House teleprompter operator for trading on advance knowledge, the termination of a MrBeast video editor due to a Kalshi insider-trading investigation, and charges against a U.S. soldier for alleged Polymarket trades.
In response to increasing scrutiny, Kalshi has implemented new safeguards.
