GnosisDAO approves Gnosis Chain for Ethereum Economic Zone

GnosisDAO has approved the transition of Gnosis Chain to a ZK-proven Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) rollup. The proposal, GIP-153, received significant support, with 123,158 GNO in favor. This move will establish Gnosis Chain as a layer-2 network, utilizing Ethereum’s validators for transaction settlement. The initial launch is targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, depending on EEZ technology readiness. This transition aims to enable Gnosis Chain-native smart contracts to interact with Ethereum, accessing mainnet assets and liquidity. The EEZ framework, developed by Gnosis and ZisK, seeks to unify Ethereum’s layer-2 ecosystem by allowing synchronous smart contract execution across rollups without bridges. Gnosis Chain is set to be the first deployed instance of this framework. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin previously raised concerns about centralized sequencers and trusted bridging mechanisms in layer-2 networks. Standard Chartered's Geoffrey Kendrick believes the EEZ could reduce reliance on blockchain bridges and increase activity within the Ethereum ecosystem, enhancing asset usability and composability across EVM chains.
