Thailand Crypto ETFs Anticipate Modest Initial Inflows

Thailand's new regulations are set to broaden access to regulated digital asset investments, with initial inflows into Thailand crypto ETFs anticipated to be modest. A CoinShares executive projects these inflows will be in the tens of millions of U.S. dollars, rather than billions.

The new rules, effective Friday, will allow Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) ETFs to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This enables retail Thai investors to access locally listed crypto ETFs. However, investments in overseas crypto ETFs via domestic brokers will be limited to institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors.

Regulatory Hurdles and Market Comparisons

Before trading begins, Thailand's first crypto funds will need regulatory approval. They also require the establishment of necessary custody and distribution arrangements. The situation in Hong Kong provides a comparative example, where even a significant financial center has struggled to attract substantial crypto ETF inflows.

Hong Kong accounts for only 0.42% of assets in global crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs). As of late September, global crypto investment products managed $172.9 billion in assets. Hong Kong contributed $733 million to that total, highlighting the challenges.

Investor Behavior and Future Outlook

The launch timeline for the first Thailand crypto ETFs remains uncertain. Existing investment avenues may temper demand for these new Thai ETFs. Some investors already gain Bitcoin exposure through foreign funds or direct crypto trading.

MFC Asset Management, a potential issuer, launched its Bitcoin ETF Tracker Fund (MBTCETF-UI) in 2024, investing in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). Another potential issuer, ONE Asset Management, became the first Thai asset manager to receive approval for a Bitcoin ETF-linked fund in 2024. Local ETFs will need to attract new investors or provide a compelling reason for existing investors to switch.

Confirmation regarding the launch plans of these companies for locally listed crypto ETFs or the commencement of trading for the first products is still pending. The market awaits further developments to assess the impact of these new offerings.
